Mercedes-Benz trucks has revealed that Melbourne-based transport operator ABS Transport has just celebrated a decade running the brand’s Actros trucks by adding another one to its fleet.
This time ABS has added the latest aerodynamic ProCabin Actros to its Mercedes fleet which now numbers 15 Actros models working in general weight up and down the East Coast.
The company first made the switch to Actros a decade ago in 2016, when it replaced its fleet of older trucks, and in that ten year period says that it has been thrilled with the results.
The company CEO, Terry Warn said that adding the Actros to the company fleet was the best thing it has ever done.
“Running B-Doubles, we were getting 1.7km per litre with the old gear and suddenly it was 2.0km or 2.1km per litre with the Benzes, so you can imagine how the savings add up over time,” said Warn.
The company said that now that it has added the Actros ProCabin to its fleet it has been immediately impressed.
“It’s a great truck, the driver loves it,” Warn said.
“This ProCabin really is beautiful to drive. They are so quiet and comfortable and the fuel economy is just fantastic,” he added.
Daimler Trucks pointed out that the new ProCabin features a low-drag design with a rounded front to reduce drag.
The company says that the new shape removes unwanted gaps and joints and guides air either around the cabin or straight into the truck’s cooling system, and that this concentration of the airflow maintains the cooling effectiveness of the Actros.
The ABS ProCabin uses Daimler’s 13-litre turbo diesel straight six and as mentioned earlier, it is hauling general freight or 
dangerous goods between Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide and also as a road train or B-triple to Brisbane.
Some of the 15 Actros on the ABS fleet have clocked up more than 1.4 million kilometres, with Mercedes-Benz remanufactured (reman) engines being fitted to the trucks at one million kilometres.
Mercedes-Benz said that with its Reman engines it takes the older engine and replaces it with an engine that has been rebuilt with remanufactured Mercedes-Benz parts using what is called the RePower plan.
“RePower is the best thing,” Warn said.
“It has just been fantastic for our business and I couldn’t speak more highly of it,” he added.
Vice president of sales, marketing and operations for Daimler Truck Australia Pacific, Andrew Assimo, said that it is great to see the Mercedes-Benz ProCabin join the ABS Transport fleet.

Mercedes was at pains to point out that its ProCabin also delivers a number of key safety benefits, with all Actros models now featuring the Active Brake Assist 6 Advanced Emergency Braking Systems safety package that includes five radars providing a 270-degree view around the vehicle and allows for optimum operation of the Active Side Guard Assist 2 system.
The company said that the backbone of this safety suite is a 
new electronics platform that can process data 20 times faster.
