Kenworth used this year’s Brisbane Truck Show to showcase its new generation wide cab models, which it said was designed to put the future to work.
The US owned, global truck maker which has been building trucks at Bayswater in Melbourne since 1971 said that the its truck range would have have new nomenclature to align the model numbers and signify the evolution, of the T320, T420, T620, and T620SAR all of which were on display.
The company underlined that this year’s Brisbane Truck Show marked nine years since the release of its revolutionary Kenworth T610 and that with ADR emission standards for heavy vehicles being phased in through ADR 80/04 in November, it took the opportunity to continue its history of evolving the model line-up.
The company claimed that by engaging closely with customers and operators, its design and engineering teams developed enhanced new models that it claims retain the best attributes of the existing range while readying themfor the future.
the company said that its customers can continue to depend on their trucks with their renowned reliability and durability, while experiencing new technology to make running their businesses easier.
Paccar Australia’s director of sales and marketing, Michael Long said its engineers spent countless hours with customers, gathering their insights before launching the new trucks.
“The feedback was clear that the existing models were excellent, but there was room for improvement and that those implemented enhancements and refinements have culminated in the new generation series,” said Long.
Paccar Australia’s chief engineer, Brad May said the company engineers spent several months in the field to understand what operators truly need in today’s market.
“The result is an impressive range of trucks that really deliver for both owners and drivers alike, no matter the application,” said May.
the company said that through extensive customer immersion, numerous features have been fine-tuned to optimise the driver experience and operational efficiency.
“Running a transport operation has not been a simple life for a long time, but it’s become infinitely more difficult now. Our customers have told us how they need accurate, timely information – but not so much they’re overwhelmed. Our new trucks are the centrepiece of this solution to this,” added Ross Cureton, Paccar’s director of product planning.
Paccar showcased its new Cummins X15 developed 15 litre engine In both the T620 and T620SAR, with power ratings up to 625hp and torque rating of 2,050 lb-ft of torque now available from 1,000 rpm, which Kenworth says makes it suitable for a wide range of applications.
The Kenworth T420SAR uses the latest ADR 80/04 compliant Paccar MX-13 engine, which there brand claims offers exceptional efficiency and proven performance, mated with its co-developed Paccar TX-12 and TX-18 12 and 18 speed transmissions, which the company claims delivers more torque at low engine speeds and high performance over a wide rev range.
the company also said its Paccar transmissions have been optimised for integration with MX engines and it claims they are ideal for vocational, heavy-haul, severe service, and high-performance applications on-highway.
It said also that the nine-litre engine in the T320 continues to offer a range of power and torque settings applicable to mid-market segments like agitators and rigid body applications and allows a low cab height in applications with frequent ingress and egress.
“A superior driver environment coupled with the technology to inform leads to better all-round driving performance, safety, efficiency and productivity,” Long added.
“The truck is the source of truth and is no longer reliant on anecdotal evidence or gut feeling about critical numbers like fuel consumption, the truck’s existing on-board sensors paired with proprietary Paccar Connect can tell the full story, providing crucial data for insightful and accurate business decision making,” said Brad May.
The new generation Kenworth trucks for show in Brisbane also feature a 15-inch high-definition instrument panel, which the company claims are intuitive and easy to read, and will help reduce distraction by allowing the driver to control how much information is shown when operating the truck.
The company claims this can be customised from driver to driver and trip to trip, while adding that the 8-inch Audio Visual Navigation (AVN) unit provides easy access display with intuitive controls for truck navigation, the audio system, and smartphone mirroring.
Kenworth said that the AVN can also be intelligently integrated with up to six external cameras giving drivers full visibility of what is happening around the vehicle.
It added that the AVN is integrated with the steering wheel controls and that the driver’s phone can be stored safely on either the charging pad, or in one of the convenient storage pockets in the new dash to further help drivers remain focused on the road,
“By being closely connected with our customers and attuned to driver needs, we’ve been able to take the existing driver and owner experience and elevate it,” said Long.
The company said that along with the T320, the T420SAR, T620 and T620SAR as well as the T420, (which was not display in Brisbane) the trucks build on a trusted legacy of innovative, durable and productive trucks, which have been designed and manufactured in Australia for local conditions and applications.
Kenworth said that supporting the line-up of new models on display in Brisbane was also the ‘cabover’ K220, which it says offers performance without compromise. starting nominally at a 97 tonne GCM and available up to more than 250 tonne GCM, through application approval.
The company pointed out that the K220 is available with a 1.7m day cab, 2.3m flat roof sleeper, or 2.3m or 2.8m aerodynamic roof sleeper cabs, in a comprehensive range of sleeper storage and bunk options, while it claims the interior of the K220 is intuitive and comfortable with the view from the driver’s seat featuring a 15-inch high-definition instrument panel, and an 8-inch AVN with smartphone integration.
the company also pointed out that the suite of driver safety technologies includes the latest generation image and object detection systems, further advancing collision mitigation and vehicle stability, and the K220 is available with a manual or the 18-speed Endurant XD Pro automated transmission.
Kenworth believes the true crowd favourite in Brisbane was its flagship T909 which it said perfectly rounded out the Kenworth stand in Brisbane .
Thie company said that this icon of the Kenworth line-up is versatile enough to operate in almost any application where fuel capacity and front axle weight is critical and delivers unmatched performance in Australia’s harshest possible conditions.
The company claims that theT909 on display featured an updated 60” bunk option as well as showcasing a Euro 6 engine and responding to an increase in customer demand for larger bunks,
