President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) Hildegard Müller has used the opening of this year’s Hanover Truck Show to call on European governments and policymakers to act now and catch up to the truck industry which she claims has led the way in innovation.
“The commercial vehicle industry stands for innovative technology, industrial value creation, and jobs, including around 140,000 jobs in Germany alone,” Müller said.
“At the same time, it has a key role to play in shaping the climate-neutral, digital mobility of the future because heavy-duty transport accounts for nearly 30 per cent of CO₂ emissions on Europe’s roads,” she said.
“The potential is enormous,” she added.
“This year exhibitors are showing that our industry has delivered with the products for climate-neutral mobility ready and operational through investment and innovation, which the industry has developed with a full range of technological options”, Müller emphasised
The truck expo that claims to be the world’s largest commercial vehicle show opened at Hanover in Germany yesterday with the theme for this year’s five day truck fest launching with its theme for this year, ‘We Deliver’ trumpeting the start of a show that claims to be setting the agenda with digital and climate-neutral mobility solutions for the future of road freight.
IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 as the show is officially called, runs every two years and opened to much fanfare with every major European truck maker in attendance along with a lot of commercial vehicle makers from around the planet with the central priority being the task of decarbonising road freight transport.
The organisers pointed out that more than 120,000 electric commercial vehicles are already in daily operation for transport companies across Germany alone, including more than 14,000 medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
Organisers trumpeted that Germany is leading the way building a fast-charging network for electric trucks along its autobahns and launching the concrete rollout phase at 124 unmanaged rest areas.
The German government is also deploying 35 hydrogen refueling stations and supporting the procurement of around 500 commercial vehicles which it claims is strengthening Germany’s competitiveness as a logistics hub and accelerates the transition of road freight transport toward climate-friendly drive technologies.
This year’s IAA TRANSPORTATION boasts 1,589 exhibitors from 46 countries, setting a claimed new record for international participation, with the number of countries represented rising from 41 at the 2024 event to 46 this year.
Companies from China, Turkey, and Italy are particularly well represented among international exhibitors this year.
IAA TRANSPORTATION Sid that this high level of international participation underscores the importance of the show as the leading global platform for transport and logistics and a central meeting place for companies, innovators, and decision-makers from around the world.
This year’s IAA TRANSPORTATION says it is focusing on key topics that are set to shape the industry’s future, including alternative powertrain technologies, particularly electrification and hydrogen, as well as autonomous driving, software-defined vehicles, and artificial intelligence.
Economic resilience and the transformation of the transport and logistics industry are also central to the event’s conference program.
During the show exhibitors will present more than 150 world launches and new products, exceeding the number at previous events nd it will once again serve as an international stage for innovations and technological developments that will shape the future of mobility and logistics.
Fully booked exhibition halls and a significant increase in new exhibitors further underscore the importance of IAA TRANSPORTATION to the international industry, and this year 33 per cent of the exhibitors are taking part for the first time.

The opening press say on Tuesday alone featured 112 press conferences. and it attracted a strong media interest ias an international platform for innovation in the transport industry.
IAA TRANSPORTATION is once again bringing together the industry’s key players and providing a forum to discuss the technologies, business models, and policy frameworks that will shape the transport sector of tomorrow.
The Show runs through to next Sunday 20th September and will run again in September 2028.
