It has been announced that the brilliant new Mercedes-Benz Actros ProCabin has been awarded the 2026 Australasian Truck of the Year award.
While we here at Truck and Bus News don’t hold a lot of province in awards such as this and many of them are not always appropriate or correctly assigned, the case of the Mercedes-Benz ProCabin is one we believe is totally deserved and worthy of the title.
The ProCabin has delivered some astounding results in terms of aerodynamics, wind noise and overall safety and efficiency and is a totally appropriate winner.
The grandly named, Australasian Truck of the Year Award saw its judges make the announcement across the ‘dutch’ing New Zealand at the NZ Road Trucking Hall of Fame in Invercargill, last week.
“We are proud the Mercedes-Benz Actros ProCabin has been recognised as the Australasian Truck of the Year for 2026,” said the vice president for sales, marketing and operations for Daimler Truck Australia Pacific, Andrew Assimo.
“The Actros ProCabin was shaped to cut fuel consumption even further, delivering our customers and edge that is even more valuable as fuel prices rise,” Assimo said.
“We’re thrilled this focus on real-world efficiency, as well our dedication to the most advanced safety, has been recognised by the Australasian Truck of the Year judges,” he concluded.
The award judges praised the Actros ProCabin’s state-of-the-art design and technology.
“The launch of the ProCabin as part of the Mercedes Benz range builds on the great strides the brand has made, in terms of cutting edge technology,” said the editorial director of New Zealand Trucking Media, Dave McCoid. McCoid is also an associate member of the International Truck of the Year (IToY) for New Zealand.
Australian freelance writer and IToY associate member for Australia, Tim Giles said the launch of the ProCabin takes the Mercedes Benz range into new territory.
“This truck is a step-change from other trucks on the market, and great to drive and the new cabin design houses an innovative air management system, and combining this with the latest state-of-the-art in Daimler safety technology creates a truck which is up for any task,” he said.
Mercedes-Benz extended the front of the new Actros ProCabin by 80mm and then rounded off the face to reduce drag and cut fuel consumption. The design removes unwanted gaps and joints and guides air either around the cabin or straight into the truck’s cooling system.
This concentration of the airflow maintains the cooling effectiveness of the Actros.
According to the International Truck of the Year (IToY) rules, the annual award is presented to the truck introduced into the Australasian market in the past year, which has made the most significant contribution to road transport safety and efficiency. The award panel says the judgement relies on several critical criteria, including technological innovation, comfort, safety, driveability, fuel economy, environmental ‘footprint’ and total cost of ownership.
